Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia. It has 3.5 million population and covers the northwest part of Somalia bordering Djibouti in the north, Ethiopia in the west, the Puntland region of Somalia in the south and the Indian Ocean in the east.
Somaliland declared independence in 1991.It has not been recognized by the international community, though Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, the European Union have offices in Somaliland.
Somaliland has a Presidential system and has held two successful elections to date. In 2012, opposition candidate Ahmed Mohamoud won the presidency. Hargeysa is the capital of Somaliland, while Berbera is the main port.
