Somalia: Parliament endorses the new Prime Minister

In an extraordinary session held today (October 17) Somalia’s Parliament unanimously endorsed Abdi Farah Shirdon as Prime Minister of Somalia.

According to media sources, the 215 members of parliament who attended the session endorsed the prime minster with no objection or abstention in an historic vote.

UN Special Representative for Somalia,Dr. Augustine Mahiga welcomed the endorsement of Mr. Abdi Farah Shirdon “Saacid” as the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He said “The approval of Prime Minister Shirdon by the Somali legislature is further incontrovertible evidence of progress in Somalia.”

He called on “the new Prime Minister to appoint without delays a new Council of Ministers”.

He added that his office “will work in partnership with the new Prime Minister and his new government on the country’s new priorities and urgent needs”.
