Ethiopian prosecutors charged six men on Tuesday in connection with a foiled plot to disrupt the Grand Ethiopian renaissance dam.

The six men allegedly received political and military trainings and armaments in Eritrea, according to reports on local media quoting the charges.

The defendants were sent to Ethiopia with a mission to disrupt the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam project, located in the north-western region Benishangul Gumuz.

Security officers captured the men while “trying to cross” into Ethiopia from Sudan.

The men are from the communities in the region and are accused of having a separatist agenda.

It was not clear when the men were captured.

A rebel group from the region, Benishangul People’s Liberation Movement (BPLM), inked a peace agreement and laid down its arms on June 2013.

However, two attacks on public transportation had been reported in the region since then.

Last November, Eritrea-trained rebels were killed and captured after crossing from Sudan into another western region Gambella.
