Ethiopia: Internet users no. reached 2.5 million, Minister says

Communication and Information Technology Minister Dr. Debre-Tsion Gebre-Michael said that fast progress has been registered in the area of communication over the last couple of years.

The Minister told ENA over the weekend that the country currently provides service to 23 million mobile telephone subscribers.

He further indicated that the number of mobile phone subscribers has also reached 17 million from only 10 million last year. The number of internet service customers has increased from only 100,000 to 2.5 million now, according to the Minister.

The Ethio-telecom has re-launched its 3G network to enable clients to be the beneficiaries of a ‘modern and efficient’ third generation service. The third generation technology would enable clients to have a network quality that would be used to make voice calls, send and receive short messages (SMS), and more importantly, get a fast internet connection.

Dr. Debre-Tsion said emphasis will also be given to develop the communication sector during the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).
