Ethiopia: 9 killed in a communal clash in Benshangul-Gumuz

At least 9 people killed in a clash in Ethiopia’s western region Benshangul-Gumuz.

In Benshangul-Gumuz, Kamashi zone, Jaganfa woreda area, at least 9 people were killed on Friday and Saturday.

Here is the summary of events I found so far:

In a “personal dispute” between an Amhara and a Gumuz, one Gumuz was killed.

The relatives (tribe?) of the desceased Gumuz man gathered and attacked a village populated by Amhara on Friday and Saturday.

At least 70-80 houses were set in fire on Friday and Saturday in that village and at least 8 Amhara were killed. And one Gumuz man was also killed.

The federal army have arrived and took control of the situation on Saturday.

Government officials insist, it is a non-political incident without involvement of administrative organs and forces.

However, Amhara activists claim the special police of Benshangul-Gumuz was involved and put the death toll upto 30.
