Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia are all committed to coordinating and cooperating in dealing with Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam, said Egypt’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources on Monday.
Egyptian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdel Moteleb said that it was “time to consider a new strategy for the available investment opportunity,” adding that any matter dealing with the dam must be agreed upon by the governments of the three countries.
The countries’ water ministers began meetings in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Monday in order to review recommendations put forth by a report formed by a tripartite committee investigating the impacts of the dam on Ethiopia’s neighbours in the north.
Abdel Moteleb added that trilateral support for the dam could set a “good example for cooperation in the region,” adding that he hoped that the outcome of the process would be the “beginning of a new era of cooperation between the three countries.”
“I would like to recall the initiative put forth by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, a proposal considering the Renaissance Dam a joint regional project from which the three countries could benefit,” said Moteleb in his Monday address to the representatives from the three countries.
Last week Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy stressed the importance of joint action and cooperation between countries when dealing with Ethiopia’s dam, saying that the water issue must not be dealt with as a “zero-sum game.”
Spokesman of the foreign ministry Badr Abdelatty said that the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn would come to Cairo “soon.”
“We will continue dialogue with Ethiopia and our Sudanese brothers,” added Abdelatty.

What a laudable process you receive finished, accompanying simplest of lexicon. I can’t fend myself to abandon a note also belief me it’s firm to instill me. Egyptian Divine of Irrigation besides Fluid Expedients Mohamed Abdel Moteleb said that it was “time to weigh a unprecedented plan for the accessible stake opening,” adding that some material dealing accompanying the plug need be agreed against by the rules of the trio countries.
The simple meaning of building such “planned dams”, with their very huge and unjustified artificial water reservoirs, is to progressively “kill tens of millions of the Egyptian people”, within few years from now, since the Ethiopian imagination and propaganda have promotions that are full of hatred speech and attack to Egypt and to its population, for no clear reason, other than that hatred speech and attack are pushed by the Israeli politicians and other water experts in Europe and the USA. What reaction will a country like Egypt have when tens of millions of its population are put under menace and subject to an international massif conspiracy to be freely killed by lack of water? You, the Ethiopians and the other members of that big killing conspiracy, may freely imagine too.
Daniell, how about ‘ a quota of about 15 billion cubic meter’ for Ethiopia…… i think is prudent and will go a long way in getting our legitimate right to our our resources. Don’t forget that the Baro- Akobo and Atbara water basins originate in Ethiopia independent of the Blue Nile and are major contributors to the lot in Aswan. They along with the water stored there should suffice for us to fill the Dam asap
Are you just throwing up #s ? Did you did any present and future values of many and inflation for the next 50 years? If you did that you will know that 2 billion is nothing.
I totally share “Agazian’s” idea with a particular emphasis on the sovereignty of Ethiopia, its water and any other related property rights of the country regarding this renaissance dam envisioned by our late great leader, Meles Zenawi.
Think the US had a hand in this change of heart? While cooperation is the best scenario in some respects, this is the domain and property of Ethiopia alone. Let’s hope there’s zero operational control ceded to the Egyptians as that would certainly be foolhardy.
Sorry, I was meant to say 2 billion instead of 2 million in my prior post 🙂
Let’s think about it this way for a second. What if Egyptians and/or Sudanese say, we pay 2 million dollars for construction cost now and Ethiopia agrees to sell us 1500 MW electric power for the next 50 years, which guarantees them for a 1500 MW for for just $26,666 per MW per year. This is how a modern day business going. This is, for example, what the Southwest Airlines did to secure its fuel supply for the next 35 years, and this is what they call it invest in the future. It is a win to Ethiopia if it can be wisely executed, and of course a definite win to Egypt and Sudan too. And that way the toxic diasporas will have no room to shout around bond selling arenas and the pressure on the pockets of Civil Servants will be minimized.
the Grand renaissance dam is ours . it’s only ethiopian dam . it’s ethiopian peoples dam what the fuck are the egyptians trying to do? we accept that we have to cooperate on the nile river for win-win policy but owning the dam by both is not going to work.i think the egyptians are out of their mind. the dam is only ours!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess this was one of our visionary leader’s suggestion almost 19 months ago and I’m glad that Egyptians are now coming to buy the idea. The truth of the matter is that Ethiopia does not have to bear all the cost for the Sudan and Egypt will ultimately benefit. We are holding most the silt back and they are going to enjoy a more regulated flow throughout the year. They have to pay for it. Well, I also strongly believe that our Government has a well detailed plan and critically scrutinized legal document in place to protect sovereignty of the country, its water rights and any appurtenances laid on its land related to the dam, before entering into any tripartite actions be it financial, technical or any other contracts with these countries. As we all know, from its inception the plan includes Sudan and Egypt as a potential buyers of the power generated. It would be more protective if they start believing to have stakes and benefits out of it than a catastrophe they have been envisioning for millennia. But again, everything has to be carefully designed with zero tolerance to interference in the sovereignty of the country, its water rights and any appurtenances thereof!!!
Whats going on????????????I am about to cry,why joint action ??does it mean joint ownership too???This is our land and hence there is no joint ownership in our land. Its Ethiopians………..if it can’t be completed due to lack of money lets postpone it for some other time……………………..whats the matter with the authorities???Can you please tell me more about this………..@DANNY???
