This article had been submitted to the bi-weekly Ethio-channel, a privately owned newspaper and a self-proclaimed supporter of EPRDF. I sent it by e-mailed on Sept 24/2009. Then, I made a follow-up call to the Editor, a week later, on Oct 1/09. I already knew space wont be an excuse, given the fact that, in that week, they wasted several pages insulting Amare Aregawi, the owner of Ethiopian Reporter. In the phone call, the editor said, No! There is no problem with the article” and “we havent decided on it, yet”.
Not a first, though probably the last. In the past decade, I saw equally unjustifiable rejections from several newspapers. Ironically, the list includes EthiopianReporter – which makes monotonous plea for press freedom, and the defunct AddisNeger – whose editors fled alleging harassment by the government.
Not an annoyance, rather a confirmation. They don’t want to be bound by objective criteria and I accept that. It is a business they built in a discouraging environment. Thus, the event confirmed to me, at least as far as the Amharic private press is concerned, what Journalist A. J. Liebling of The New Yorker said long ago, “Freedom of the press belongs to the man who owns one.”
Hence, I started to blog.
You are the most floosh person, you said my literature sides to EPRDF. Why don’t to say to “TRUTH?”
I Love Meles.
