Abune Mathias elected Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church was elected its 6th Patriarch this afternoon, several media reported. 

The election was conducted this afternoon following an indirect election process.

A total of 806 voters, including Archbishops, department heads of the patriarchate office, ancient monasteries and churches, clergy, representative’s of Church members and Sunday school students voted for the election of the new Patriarch.

Accordingly to official results, Abune Mathias, Archbishop of the Church’s monastery in Jerusalem, received 500 out of 806 votes.

Whereas, Abune Elsae, Abune Yosef, Abune Matheos and Abune Hizkel got 39, 98, 98 and 70 votes, respectively. One ballot paper was disqualified.

Abune Mathias will be enthroned as the 6th Patriarch will take his seat on Sunday March 3, 2013 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

It is to be recalled that the 5th Patriarch of the Church suddenly passed away last August.
