Six Indian workers died at Fincha Sugar Factory on Friday, according to a statement from the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation.
The Indians were working for an Indian Company, Surendra Engineering Corporation LTD, which is a sub contractor of Overseas Infrastructure (Aliance) India PVT LTD, the major contractor of Fincha Sugar Factory Expansion Project.
The cause of the accident was described as “a steam burst out of a tube that transports it”.
Three of the Indians died instantly, while the rest died after reaching the health center of the Factory.
The statement from the Sugar Corporation expressed its “deepest condolences to the families of the deceased Indians as well as to their Company at this difficult time”.
Fincha Sugar Factory is located in the western part of the nation, in Eastern Wollega Zone, 350 km away from Addis Ababa.
The expansion project is slated to upgrade its cane crushing capacity from 5,000 tons to 12,000 tons a day, thereby increasing its annual production to 270,000 tons of sugar and 20,000 miter cube ethanol.
