Saudi Ambassador summoned over Ethiopian killing

The government of Ethiopia is providing support to Ethiopian workers residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with no work permits following the expiry of the amnesty period from last Sunday (November 3). The Government is actively working through the Ethiopian Embassy in Riyadh to repatriate Ethiopian citizens. Following the expiration of the grace period for overseas workers who have no legal status, there have been reports that an Ethiopian migrant was killed and other Ethiopians were subject to mistreatment.

The Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs held discussions with Muhammed Ibrahim Alshugairan, Charge de Affairs of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Addis Ababa, and sought an explanation regarding the killing of an innocent Ethiopian national and the treatment of other Ethiopian citizens.

The Charge d’Affairs said he would bring the issue to the attention of his government and promised an explanation soon. The Ministry expressed its strong belief that any problems occurring in relation to Ethiopian citizens residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia should be handled in the light of long-standing relations between the two friendly countries.

The Ministry would like to express its respect for the decision of the Saudi Authorities and the policy of deporting illegal migrants. At the same time, it condemned the killing of an Ethiopian and mistreatment of its citizens residing in Saudi Arabia.

The Government is closely following the condition of Ethiopian nationals in Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has deployed extra staff to help in the legal work required by the Saudi Authorities and provide support for Ethiopian workers residing in Saudi Arabia with no work permits as well as assist Ethiopian migrants where required.

Embassy and consular officials are providing the necessary information to Ethiopian citizens on how to deal with their problems and helping citizens, visiting deportation centers and police stations if any Ethiopian nationals are being held.

  • I read an initiative in one of Ethiopian websites suggesting that Ethiopians should pressure the Saudi government to respect human rights in the raid through writing, calling and if feasible demonstrating at Saudi Arabian embassies through out the world. I have written the following email to the embassy in the country I am currently residing in. I am posting it so that others may use it after making any changes in format and content they wish to make.

    "Dear Ambassador,

I bring to your kind attention the saddening ordeal of Ethiopian citizens, shown on numerous reports containing photos and videos surfacing on social and mainstream medias at the time this email is written. As shown in these reports, people have been exposed to beatings, rape, killings and inhuman detention by law officers and citizens in el-Manhoufa and various other places in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in connection with a raid to arrest illegal immigrants.

Dear Ambassador, this email is an entreaty to you as the Ambassador of the Kingdom and as a fellow human being to look into the matter and urge your government to respect the human rights of immigrants from Ethiopia and other countries in enforcement of immigration regulations.

While I understand that the Kingdom as every country is entitled to control illegal immigration and that the ultimate solution lies within Ethiopia to fight poverty which is the source of immigration, it is also self evident that no matter the situations, government should not perpetrate (or even condone) such blatant abuse of human rights and killings.

Ethiopia has welcomed and sheltered the first Muslims who were persecuted in their own country, Saudi Arabia, . It is a sad that today Ethiopians are facing subhuman treatments in the same country. It is also sad that such abuse and brutality is happening in a country that is a source of the Muslim religion which upholds equality and peace in the human race.

I am hopeful that you feel the sufferings of these people and take your time to urge your government to deal with the matter in a humane manner."
