Must-read| What Egyptians saying about Ethiopia’s dam

Cairo, Egypt

The news was met with a lot of media hype in Cairo where many people genuinely believe the Nile waters should be reserved for their use and Ethiopia has little need for it. Thus many see the dam project as an assault on their lives and/or part of some sort of conspiracy.

The Egyptian media also gives insight to several relevant issues. For example, the International Panel of Experts is not expected to present final conclusions today and there may be difference among the experts.

Here are some of the items I collected from Egyptian sites (mostly Arabic) on Wednesday and Thursday. (The Arabic texts were translated using google translator, then further edited where the accurate meaning can be discerned from context)

Note that most of the items below are extracts and the sub-titles are mine.

Party leader: “recall Ambassador from Addis Ababa”

Mohamed Anwar Sadat, leader of reform and development, called upon President Mohamed Morsy to immediately summon the Egyptian ambassador in Ethiopia for consultation.

He also suggested to start reviewing scenarios to deal with the crisis of the construction of the Renaissance Dam, including through popular pressures inside Ethiopia and Ethiopia’s “Islamic” neighboring countries such as Eritrea and Somalia, which don’t have a good relationship with Ethiopia.

The move comes in protest against the decision of the Ethiopian side yesterday to change the course of the Blue Nile in an abrupt manner. Sadat said that we are striving to create a pleasant atmosphere with countries that have ignored the former regime and worsened relations with them, especially the Arab states surprised by Ethiopia to carry out the entry stages of construction of a dam renaissance without respecting international conventions or even waiting for the report of the Technical Committee trilateral supposed to end of its report soon.

Issawi warned againt carrying out any military action or sabotage Egypt against the dam, recalling the strength of relations between Ethiopia and the international powers superpowers, particularly the United States and Britain. Hold a trial for the negligence in Egypt’s national security”

Hani Raslan, head of the Sudan and Nile Water Basin department at Centre for Political and Strategic Studies, stated on private Egyptian television channel Dream that the situation reflects an attempt by the government, and primarily Egypt’s irrigation minister, Mohamed Bahaa El-Din, to disseminate inaccurate information about the negative impact the building of the dam would have.

Mild damage to Egypt’s interests is possible”

Mohamed Idris, Egyptian ambassador in Addis Ababa, told Ahram Online on Tuesday…[ that]:

“We are pursuing a win-win scenario in which the interests of both sides can be served and accommodated”.

The possibility of only mild damage to Egypt’s interests is possible because the water to be stored behind the dam will only be used to generate electricity and not for irrigation.

There are several factors that should be taken into consideration and will be decided upon by technical experts. We are expecting Ethiopian officials to make good on their promise to act in a way that will not harm Egyptian interests. It is not impossible”.

“The reception of President Mursi in Ethiopia is shame on Egypt”

A prominent TV commentator, Ahmed Meslemany  said the following:

What the president is saying is not related neither to science nor to politics or religion. If your are not able to mange it leave your position to somebody else who can . The president takes his responsiblity about anything taking place in his country

the reception of the president in Ethiopia is shame on Egypt position … he was not in the first row … he was in the fifth row and only a Minister of Mine was waiting for him not the prime minister. Morsi did not discuss the Nile crisis .. and before his plane left Addis Ababa , work in the dam has already begun.

Egyptian intelligence and foreign forward its report to the presidency, but the presidency is interested in other things and the presidency did not bother the subject and reports with deep regret…..however, unfortunately Egyptian national security at risk and Egypt is now at a cross road.

  • The comments here are very sad indeed. It seems Ethiopians commenting have a huge chip on their shoulder. The bitterness is almost too much to take in. One person talks of "letting Egypt exist." Why are you all so angry? It's too bad you Ethiopians do not pursue the betterment of your country in all ways with this kind of vigor. Do you need a fake enemy for motivation? I don't recall this kind of resolve when Ethiopians were dying and begging because of famine.

  • Now Ethiopia has reached at a point where it has become able to use it's resources for a good cause inspite of all the difficulties and internal conflict of interest and uneven and unfair distribution of these limited resources. We are leaving with our problems (internally) and waiting for the right time at which we will be able to share our resources equally amongst our different ethnic groups and people of different political outlooks. But these in no way will stop our people from fighting for their common interest and the country's safety. It is plainly visible now for all the world to see that one can not forcefully take from others the share they lawfully deserve. That time is gone. Egyptians must wake up. The military option is never going to benefit Egypt. Egypt for that matter is facing it's own internal political turmoil and that nation is not even as united as we are at present. We have our own internal unsolved issues but as has always been the case, we are one under the flag. The wisest thing to do would be to cooperate and plan together without harming each other. We have a lot to share with our neighbors other than the river Nile. Extreme and selfish interests are no more welcome. Working hand in hand to industrialize both countries would be by far better.

  • For the past 300 years or so Africa has been deprived of its development, by neglect of other developed countries and by malicious indirect economical sanctions and most of all by feeding us just enough support so we don’t think about our development so we could stand by our own economic advancement.
Other major problem Africa has is that we don’t seem to support each other towards growth. We are selfish thinking our own country instead of the whole Continents Africa. On the top of that our politicians are lousy and corrupted.
Having knowledge that, Egypt should understand the dialogue between Egypt and Ethiopia should only be how Egypt help itself feed or conserve the Nile during the process of this massive project.
Solution: stop worrying, wasting time and resources on what Ethiopia is doing and use that time to divert or reduce the amount of Nile that is flowing in to the ocean to your worthless 97% desert land.
If you choose to go to war, here are some not all of what you need to consider.
This comment is for the Egyptian government, military and those extremist not for the People of Lovely good Egipian people.
I am not sure why the Egyptians would allow their government to manipulate their mind. This government is not going to be there forever, the Nile River is there for generations to come.
Why go to war with the country that has full control over their water supply.
Don't they know we have never been colonized nor be defeated by terrorist?
Don’t they know we had neither Airplanes nor Bombs when we defeated the powerful Italians
    Facts one:
If the Ethiopian government does not deal with you, the people of Ethiopia will, by poisoning the water. Are you going to send your bombers to guard the water 24 hrs. a day?
    Fact two:
Provoke the people of Ethiopia and we will start using the water for irrigation, where we are not at the current time. Are you going to bomb every farmer’s house if we really use it irrigation?
Your concern is now with the Ethiopian Government, it is with the Ethiopian Farmers. They have now opened up their eyes and they know the benefit of the river.
I say you better come to your senses and pray that we don't change our position.
    Fact three
Do you think our government would think about starting a project like this, devote 5 Billon Dollars knowing the history of outsiders telling us we can’t use or how we should and should not use our own River for the past 100 years, without having a plan and resources to respond to intruders and to deal with terrorist?
    Fact four:
Have you thought about why our government is not responding to your bluff?
    Fact five:
Why are you wasting the water you have been receiving for the past 500 years, free flow in to the ocean when you could have diverted it to change 97% of your worthless land?
I say wake up and accept the reality, use the water we are sending your way wisely, don't loss a drop going to the ocean; find a way not to depend on Nile.
    Fact six
Don't you for a moment think there might be another power that is helping us, knowing your history of extremism?
We love the people of Egypt and don't send them to war.
I had to add my comment so the Egyptian Gov. knows what they are getting in to.
    The z man
I could go on and on!
Please do not make a mistake indulging your people to go to war. The common people will be massacred for a simple problem that you could solve. You are getting enough to turn your country green if you could just build your own dam to stop the Nile from going in to the ocean.
Don’t be dumb, remember Egypt’s civilization, we are trying to bring it back. And from all obstacles we have had, you are going to be the one to stop it!

Solution the Ethiopian People may consider!
The Egyptian people get billions of dollars from the international community or country or countries that have the power to do so, for using the Swiss canal, or to keep peace with Israel, or for whatever reason.
Ethiopia has to generate the power it needs and the income it needs to come out of poverty.
The dam is designed to just that not to hurt the people of Egypt.
Can the international community, African Unity or any power that has interest in the region or more importantly, Egypt come up with a compensation plan to support Ethiopia to stop us from building this Dam? If we could accomplish the need that this Dam is designed to produce, we may permit the water to flow. The question of Egypt is not just the water; it is the minerals’ and soil that the water is stilling from Ethiopia. If we build the Dam, it purifies the water and they just get water instead of juicy water.
So having said that the compensation has to be double of what the Dam would have produced.
Otherwise the Burden is on Egypt where they have to make a decision to go to war or not. If they do and how long it would take, they will still affect the supply and deprive of their people even one Egyptian farmer the supply they would have had.

This Dam just got bigger than just water supply,
If Egypt is getting $50 or more billions of dollars from where ever for whatever strategic reasons, Ethiopians should get double that amount to let Egyptians exist because we control the water. If not whoever is giving them the money has more reason to help us build the Dam, so they don't have to pay them any longer. Whoever helps Ethiopia build the Dam will have control over Egypt.
What do you think about that, do you still want to aggravate us? Each way you slice it, Ethiopia comes out on the top!
The Z man at the Ethiopian government service.

  • Some Ethiopians are thinking about the silly issue of the internal problem of Ethiopia; but our issue is the idea of Egyptian that they are going to diminish our renaissance dam. By the way, all Ethiopians do u understand n aware of their evil idea? Don't worry, not in 21st century, we defeated our enemies in the past ancient history which the world knows. So, in every direction they come, we are capable enough n wise. But we need to live with the world peace fully. If it is beyond our patience, we know what to do. In general, all Ethiopians who is living in Ethiopia n out side Ethiopia, forget our political difference n unite on this issue, because this is the only means to eradicate poverty. Please, unite, unite, unite........................

  • Hi all Ethiopians!!! please don't be aggressive than Logical, we all of us Ethiopians want peace with all people of the world because our peer to peer peace were the manifestation of we Ethiopian , we also have great National Ambition on Our Lovely and God givited Country "ETHIOPIA" not only history!!!. I wanna to recommend on our comment some body have been talk about Internal issue like "EPDRF mission, Adminstration problem, region based activity , etc those all are Local issue and for sure we can detect and protect it if we able to participate than be 'Solitude( በሚቀራረብ አማርኛ 'ተቺ ብቻ መሆን'",when we come to global issue/National issue we have to represent Ethiopian for our Identity!!!. I have been reading so many site regarding the GERD (Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam ), more or less their intention were to use Internal misconception between us , so think Logically than Emotionally. I hope with God GERD will never been stooped, what ever some body else says like Egypt propaganda!!!!! ኢትዮጵያን እግዚአብሄር ይባርክ!!! እግዚአብሄር ጥሩ ነገረ ያሰማን!!!

    • Bravo.
It is no use to threaten us b/c they fought with us previously and the Egyptians were the defeated once. If they need to test with this generation once more we will erase them from the map of the world with out any bulet.
We will continue to tell the story of a war if it erupts b/c we belive that we will continue to be alive.

      • when would the unjust and egoistic thinking of the Egyptians be altered?we know what they did for more than a thousand and a half years to us under the disguise of religious service. They are one of the reasons for the poverty of Ethiopia. Now time has come and a one sided game is going to be a fair play.We Habeshas are not as stupid as you.we know that the river is a life giving water for Egypt. Our dam doesn't affect your extravagant water use.More over it would be helpful for both of you and the Sudan.please calm down and try to think not by your fist but by you head.

  • Where does the Water Originate!!?????!!!????
The water comes from Ethiopia not from Red sea or Indian Ocean. It is from the heart of Ethiopia. Can Ethiopia prevent tourists from visiting Egypt's pyramids since it may harm the tourist flow to Ethiopia?? Egypt's stand is like that.....Egypt wants to develop projects for Ethiopia, Egypt wants to develop policies to Ethiopia,....After all, Egypt is one of the poor African countries that needs to work hard to bring its people out of poverty....How many Egyptians do have sufficient food and shelter....rather than getting obsessed with war where the budget could help its poor people and, war which would result permanent damage to its Nile flow and which will be futile at the end of the day, better for Egypt to tilt towards political solution-Win-Win.
Otherwise, WE ALL ETHIOPIANS ARE READY TO FIGHT EGYPTIANS!! BUT AT THE END OF THE WAR, NILE WILL BE DIVERTED TO ETHIOPIA FOR GOOD!!
