Ethiopia: Addis Ababa to introduce modern address system

Integrated Land Management Information Project Development Office of the Addis Ababa City Government said it is registering promising results in the execution of modern residential address system project that is being carried out in two sub-cities as part of its effort to establish address system based on block, street and house numbers.

Office Unit Coordinator Ephrem Belete told The Ethiopian Herald that a manual has been prepared to facilitate the numbering of each street and house in collaboration with the German-based firm Hansa Luftbild Consulting. The development of address map for two woredas has already been finalized.

Woreda 10 of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-city and Woreda 3 of Bole Sub-city are taken as samples. According to Ephrem, the former is a good representation for irregular settlement while the latter is a relatively modern one. He further indicated that to increase the reliability of the samples, the unit has come up with an agreement to take two sample woredas from each sub-city and the address map development and other activities will soon be carried out. Until now the installation of 98 per cent of sign-posts are accomplished in the two woredas.

He also indicated the existence of many houses in a compound together with irregular settlement in the city among others which has put challenges during the pilot implementation, especially to lable house numbers. “The city administration is preparing a detailed directive that ease the complexity of the labeling” he said. Besides, a metric numbering system, where doorways are given a number according to their distance from point zero. Odd numbers are located on left side of a street, even on a right, according to the office.

Asked whether the former official and popular naming of places will be changed or not, he said. “We are giving only standardized numbers of streets and houses, therefore, the previous naming will remain as they are.”
