Ethiopia: Top intelligence official detained

(Daniel Berhane)

Top Ethiopia intelligence official detained on allegations of corruptions.

Woldeselassie Woldemichael is director of the domestic intelligence department of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISS).

Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission of Ethiopia (FEACC) alleged that Woldeselassie was found in possession of unexplained property to a federal court last Friday.

A judge granted 14 days remand in police custody as per FEACC’s investigators’ request. The investigators didn’t disclose the details of Woldeselassie’s alleged misconduct, nor the scope of their investigation.

Woldeselassie’s predecessor, Ayechew Tefeta, was detained and charged with similar allegations about a year ago. The case is still pending on trial.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency is one of the most opaque institutions in the country with little information on the public sphere regarding its officials and rmodus operandi.
