The Egyptian media outlet, Almasry Alyoum, reported today that Pope Shenouda III, head of the Alexandria Coptic Church is trying to mediate the ‘Nile Crisis’ by communicating with Patriarch Abune Paulos of the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church. Since Almasry Alyoum website is unlikely to be visited by most Ethiopians, I presented the news here:
Sources from the Egyptian Coptic Church said its leader, Pope Shenouda III, is communicating with the Ethiopian church in an effort to help resolve the water crisis, which erupted after Ethiopia began constructing a Millennium Dam on the Nile.
Sources said that a trip by the Pope to Ethiopia has been suggested.
Bishop Morcos, head of the information committee at the Holy Synod, said the strong ties between the two countries’ churches may help resolve the crisis, and said, “We won’t hold back in performing our roles if political leadership asks for that.”
Ethiopian Bishop Poulos visited Egypt at the end of 2010 and prayed with Pope Shenouda, added the sources. They said Shenouda is willing to travel to Ethiopia — although he arrived from a treatment trip in the US weeks ago — for the sake of Egypt’s security.
Shenouda wants the Ethiopian church to convince the government there not to escalate the water problem with Egypt and Sudan. Shenouda had declared earlier that there have been communications with the Ethiopian church in this regard.
However, the Ethiopian church said the situation was difficult in light of the secular nature of the Ethiopian government.
Our Almighty God, has His own plan to feed His own people. We don’t want to be called poor or backward country for ever. We reached the time we have to use our God given water accordingly with out anyone treat.
ihave seen good things i am happy
Egypt never threat Ethiopian again( till this time,we have stayed by your bad culture that treat us to stay in poverty.
sorry Egypt ?we choose war rather than to stay in poverty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they insulting us
@manyazewal – How dare you call the Coptic Orthodox Pope a “mesenger from satan” that is so disrespectful. are you an orthodox christian? i am a sudanese coptic orthodox christian, I would never call an ethiopian bishop or priest ‘satan’.
Also the coptic and ethiopian orthodox church both have close ties, we are sister churches. in the city i live in we both share the same church. we are both the only ancient african churches and we should stick together!!!
why the pop didn’t come to ethiopia in the past and discuse about the nile issue since he appointed as pop? so it’s better to understand the mission behind the religion .
lets talk around the table and come across mtual interest of this two people …this is the only solution for decays of existining ethiopian problem otherwise it would be decays problem for egypt in turn beining in desert.
this is the write time to do what we can on the nile rivere in ordere to obey the agrement i hope egyptian will understand this and they hav to
hi! no no donot come dear pop to our country this is no a problem of religion rather leaving or deaing
so we cannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn fight with u motherfuckers
It is obvious that any Egyptian government doesn’t give any space for Egyptian Coptic Church/christians/,why the awake now ? booooooooo…….
I think we need to exhaust all options and Ethiopia has this patience of accommodating all possibilities. We know how the great King Menelik II won Italians; we know also how earlier leaders of Ethiopia won Egyptians and other colonizers. The latest history of us also tell us same things. We believe Egypt has been against us through out History; the Coptic Church was one of the best instrument to exercise all the devils on us. However, still we need to have the heart and listen to them. Ethiopia has already worked out the assignment and we will remain bold.
The first and most important thing Egyptian should do is to make a U turn from their age old destabilization foreign policy towards Ethiopia.
Do the Egyptian know they have lost the hearts and minds of the Ethiopians a long time ago?
I am not insulting. It is a historical fact. Egyptians are the ones who kept us in prison for so long. They are promoting the same idea until now. We need to tell them the actual fact they had been doing which they did not stop so far. Did you read someone saying if the govermnment of Ethiopia will not stop building dam on Nile, we will bring Tahir Square to Addis Ababa whcih in reallty they can’t.
Our past mistreatment in the name of religion is enough. We don’t have sholder to cary more anymore. Please tell their politicians keep silent on the matters of Ethiopia and focus on their internal matters. What they have doing on us has no support from Holy Bible or Qura’an or international law.
Please don’t push me speak what I don’t want to …… OK?
what is my suggestion is that insulting such a big person is bad.
It was the Egyptian coptic church that imposed biblical and non biblical holidays on Ethiopia until 1959 when the first Ethiopia Pope was consicreted to cheat Ethiopians so that the Egyptians may build an Aswan Dam on Nile. Hell to them. We don’t need their madiation. Now we have got the idea.
I don’t think the Ethiopian Orthodox Church may negotiate on the God given rights of Ethiopia for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was the one that was fighting and dying for Ethiopia and its freedom from western colonization.
We believe in prayer and work as Holy Bible tells us. let anyone comment on my ideas.
sami
i do not suppose it is appropriate to call the case a crises. after all the prime minister has down played the Egyptian side in his recent address.
Egyptian pop “THE MASSENGER FROM SETAN”, we dont want him. “egyptian pop” has nothing with Ethiopian orthodox church. Ethiopians are no more stupid to discus about abay river with him.(ketenkuy gar yemin chewota new degmo endegena)
Thank you very much.
It was a gross mistake.
My intention was to avoid the possibility that foreigners may misunderstand the term ‘orthodox’.
I thank you for the correction.
Please keep in touch.
Hey there is no such thing as ‘Ethiopian Coptic Church’…Copt is an ancient word for pre-Islamic Egyptians, its just Ethiopian Orthodox church!!
